Zgorzelecki District is situated in the south western part of Poland. It lies in the western part of Lower Silesia voivodship. It was created in 1999 due to administrative reform. Its main city is Zgorzelec. The district borders with two countries: Czech Republic from the south and Germany from the west. According to administrative division in the terms of NUTS zgorzelecki district belongs to level 4 and consists of: Urban communes: Zawidów, Zgorzelec Urban-rural communes: Bogatynia, Pieńsk, Węgliniec Rural communes : Sulików, Zgorzelec Cities: Zawidów, Zgorzelec, Bogatynia, Pieńsk, Węgliniec
The Zgorzelecki District borders with two countries: with Czech Republic from the south and Germany from the west, establishing the internal border with EU. Zgorzelecki district is a part of jeleniogórsko-wałbrzyski region and also belongs to Euroregion Nysa. The special localization of the Zgorzelec Commune at the border with the Czech and German Republics creates exceptionally favourable condition for the development of business. The area of Bogatynia Town and Commune constitutes the most industrialized part of Lower Silesia, and the big companies of KWB 'Turów' and 'Turów' Electric Power Plant stimulate the development of industry not only in the commune but also in the whole region as well as assure themselves a stable position on the list of the biggest companies in Lower Silesia Province. There is made a lot of effort to stimulate fast development of the small and medium-size businesses as those make the biggest contribution to the general structure of companies operating in the area (currently there are 7 500 registered companies).
The location of Zgorzelec Commune close to the borders creates perfect conditions to undertake many ventures at integration of the regions, exchanging of experience, coordination in various areas of social and economic life.
